NICK POTTS
I fell in love with the written word in high school. Whether it was music, poetry, essays, or books, I just loved to write and tell stories. In college, I turned that interest into a side hustle. I wrote and edited essays and research papers for fellow classmates, which quickly turned into writing and editing doctoral theses for friends and co-workers. I then became involved in the world of book writing and spent a great deal of time developing a novel. At some point though, I discovered that my passion was to help others tell the best version of their own stories. Now, almost 12 years later, I have made that passion my career.
I have over a decade of writing and editing experience. I have a degree in languages and literature, taken numerous classes in fiction writing, and have spent years honing my skills in the written word. That isn't what makes me a great editor though. What makes a great editor is life experience. I have degrees in Criminal Justice and Criminology, International Studies, Asian languages and literature. I have worked with the U.S. Marshals, I have been a school teacher, a mental health counselor on a psychiatric unit, an interventionist, a security guard at a race track, as a painter, a videographer, and a coach. I have trained and competed in judo, jiu jitsu, wrestling, muay thai, and mma at the highest level. I have written and produced music. I have created and produced a podcast. I have traveled both domestically and internationally. And I have a wonderful girlfriend and three amazing children. The point? An editor should be someone who understands you, where you come from, and the story you are trying to tell. I am confident that I can and will do just that.

One of the biggest concerns as a writer is that we’re going to change your work into something it was never meant to be. That is not what we do at Gold Medal Editing. Our goal is to help you tell the best version of your story. Our job isn’t to alter your work, but to enhance it.
Before I came to work at Gold Medal Editing, I was actually a client. For ten years I’ve trusted this service with my stories. They have never disappointed me. Through multiple developmental edits and one-on-one workshops with my editor, my manuscript became so much more than I ever realized it could be, all while keeping my vision intact. I tell you this because as a writer myself, I understand exactly what it is you’re going through. I will be an advocate for your voice and together, we will mold your draft into a finished product.
I’ve always excelled in English. From an early age I’ve had a passion for writing, a passion I’ve carried with me throughout my life. In high school I joined every creative writing class I could find. When there were no more classes for me to join, I became a teaching assistant for the classes I’d already taken. In college I majored in Journalism with a minor in Creative Writing.
After graduating in 2012, I began my professional journey as a journalist. For nine years I’ve worked in the industry, covering everything from high school sports to murder trials. I’ve documented refugees and told their stories. I’ve worked with first responders on crime scenes, doing ride-alongs with officers, paramedics and coroners. I’ve gone with forensic and archeological teams in search of a missing head from a cold case dating back to 1979. I’ve interviewed psychics and paranormal investigators. I’ve seen most natural disasters and have shared the stories of the survivors with the world.
I’ve met presidential candidates and Olympic athletes. I’ve interviewed everyone from sewage workers to morticians. I’ve spent time as a snake handler, a photographer and a camp counselor. I’ve been skydiving, rock climbing and scuba diving. I’ve loved and lost, feeling the pain of divorce and custody battles. I’ve struggled as a single father, and felt the joy of watching my son grow.
If storytelling is about life experiences, trust an editor who has experienced all that life has to offer.
